Where Education, Sustainability, and Youth Empowerment Grow Together
Born from the vision and determination of young students, this biocultural project addresses the urgent need for truly sustainable economic and educational development in Puerto Rico. “Planet Guardians” is a student organization founded by Claudia L. Camacho Franceschini and Ariana M. Camacho Franceschini, students at Colegio Utuadeño San José, representing the emergence of a new generation of conscious and active leaders. The organization is composed of children, youth, and adults—students and community members—all united by a common interest in sustainable development.
This project, aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is not just about producing food; it is about cultivating minds, empowering communities, and creating a replicable model of self-sufficiency and respect for the planet. It is a living classroom where science, agriculture, and economics intertwine to shape the guardians of the future.
Commitment to the 2030 Agenda: Alignment with the SDGs
“Planet Guardians” acts as a local engine to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, integrating their targets into every activity:
- SDG 4: Quality Education: The project is a platform for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, where students acquire knowledge about sustainability, biology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, developing crucial technical and socio-emotional skills.
- SDG 2: Zero Hunger and Sustainable Agriculture: Through the production of natural, organic, and non-organic eggs using innovative methods, we promote food security and sustainable agriculture, demonstrating how to produce nutritious and accessible food in rural settings.
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: By training students in a circular and productive economic model, we equip them with tangible vocational skills that increase their employability and entrepreneurial potential.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: The project is a model of a circular economy. We develop organic feed using insect larvae (Tenebrio molitor, Zophobas morio, Hermetia illucens) and local crops (Corn and Sorghum), closing nutrient cycles and reducing waste.
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities: We transform school spaces into productive and educational areas, promoting environmental and social sustainability within the community and strengthening community bonds through collaboration among various schools.
- SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: This project is proudly inclusive. Students from the Special Education program—a program for youth with disabilities up to age 21—are integral members of Planet Guardians. They will lead an “Inclusive Sensory Garden”, which will produce food for the quail and laying hens, while also serving as a therapeutic space to develop sensory, cognitive, and motor skills, ensuring no one is left behind.
Transformative Benefits
- Educational Empowerment: Students of all abilities become active agents in their own learning, leading a project that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in a practical and meaningful way.
- Life Skills Development: They acquire responsibility, patience, teamwork, and critical thinking while managing a real-life enterprise, from raising insects and quail to marketing eggs.
- Food Sovereignty and Environmental Awareness: They learn to produce their own food responsibly, understanding the connection between food systems and planetary health.
- Inclusion and Community Strengthening: The project creates a powerful hub for collaboration among students of different ages, abilities, and schools, empowering marginalized communities through a replicable educational economic model. The Inclusive Sensory Garden is a cornerstone of this community-building effort.
Core Objectives
- Establish a sustainable egg production system using Japanese quail and laying hens as a pilot educational and economic project, offering organic, natural, and non-organic eggs.
- Develop and refine natural and organic diets for the poultry using insects and local grains.
- Empower students, including those in Special Education, as sustainability ambassadors, training them to replicate the model in other communities.
- Create and maintain the “Inclusive Sensory Garden” as a key component of the food system and a therapeutic educational space.
- Create a marketing channel for the eggs produced reinvesting proceeds into project expansion and student scholarships.
- Document the entire process to create an open, replicable educational model at national and international levels.
Why Now? An Urgent Opportunity
- Sustainable Future: The need to educate a new generation in sustainable and resilient practices is more critical than ever in the face of climate and economic challenges.
- Disconnection from Nature: This project reconnects youth with the origin of their food and natural processes, combating the loss of practical knowledge.
- Fostering True Inclusion: It provides a vital, practical platform for youth with disabilities to contribute meaningfully, develop skills, and connect with peers and their environment.
- Alignment with the SDGs: As detailed above, the project is a direct tool for advancing multiple fronts of the 2030 Agenda.
- Entrepreneurship as a Tool for Change: We demonstrate that entrepreneurial spirit, guided by sustainability, can be a powerful force for community development.
